COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

Mr James Tamblyn

Congratulations to everyone involved in the Junior (Years 4-7) production of Aladdin this week. An event of this scale with such young students is only possible thanks to the extraordinary commitment of the students and staff. My heartfelt thanks and congratulations to all who contributed to this spectacular show. I also thank the families who helped with costumes, props, transport and moral support through the many hours of rehearsal. Audience members enjoyed a wonderful evening of entertainment. Students involved will carry lifelong memories and forge fantastic new friendships from this experience. Congratulations to all!

Junior Musical Performance – ‘Aladdin’

In recent months, staff have worked collaboratively to refresh our Student Engagement and Relationships Policy. At the core of our educational values is the belief that every community member has the right to feel safe, respected, valued and included at all times. To this end, the College has established expectations that clarify and support the rights and responsibilities of both students and staff, applicable equally to all. All staff and students have the following core rights and responsibilities:

  • The right to feel safe
  • The right to learn and teach in an environment where everyone is supported, accepted and treated fairly
  • The right to clarity on academic and behavioural expectations
  • The responsibility to ensure behaviour is appropriate and supports the wellbeing, safety and rights of themselves and others
  • The responsibility to demonstrate respect for all people and property
  • The responsibility to be punctual and organised

I extend my gratitude to the students and staff for their contributions to building a culture rooted in caring for one another.

Senior Learning Centre

The Senior Learning Centre (SLC) build continues to progress well. The second and final pour of the first-floor (suspended) slab took place on Wednesday, 28 August. The ground-floor scaffolding is now being removed, making the building’s footprint more clearly defined. My ongoing thanks to all community members for your patience and flexibility during this construction.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Mrs Mandy Hore

The first of our Italian-themed Years 6-12 Community Dinners took place earlier this week. On Monday, Petworth gathered for an evening of connection, laughter and delicious lasagne and gelato, followed by Brooklyn’s dinner on Tuesday. There was plenty of excitement as students tried to capture the perfect Leaning Tower of Pisa photo and tossed coins into Pedare’s version of the Trevi Fountain.

Y6-12 Petworth Community Dinner – Monday, 26 August

A highlight of the dinners was welcoming back old scholar, Jack Rowley (Class of 2019), who joined the Brooklyn dinner and shared reflections on what Pedare and the Brooklyn Community meant to him. Students consistently speak fondly of their communities and the lasting friendships and connections they’ve made.

Y6-12 Brooklyn Community Dinner – Tuesday, 27 August

Petworth, in its inaugural year, invited current students to participate in an on-the-coach interview, where they discussed their motivation for joining a new Community and their aspirations for the ‘Panthers.’

The Community system aims to promote a sense of belonging among our students. Upon joining the College, students are allocated to a Community, which fosters a student-centred approach that cultivates culture, engagement and pride. In Middle and Senior School, the Community system is the cornerstone of our pastoral care. Students remain in their Core Class in Years 6-7, and in Years 8 and 9, they move into vertical Home Groups based on their Community. The Senior School features vertical Year 10, 11 and 12 Home Groups. These groupings cater to the specific needs of each stage of student development, providing opportunities to tailor discussions and activities to suit their needs.

Next week, we look forward to the Eldergreen, Greenwith, Hillcott and Surrey Community Dinners.

I’d like to express my gratitude to the Community Coordinators who planned and organised their respective Community Dinners and to our Parents and Friends volunteers who assisted with the event.

HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

Ms Lisa Daws

As we navigate the busy term filled with events and celebrations, it’s essential to pause and reflect on gratitude. The support from our College community – teachers, students, parents and staff – has been invaluable. Each event highlights the dedication and hard work of everyone involved. From Book Week and Coffee Catch-Up Mornings to the Junior School Musical, Parent-Teacher Interviews, sports carnivals, swimming lessons and more—the list goes on.

Gratitude helps us recognise these efforts and the positive moments we often overlook. As we continue through this term, let’s take time to express our thanks and acknowledge the contributions that make our school a vibrant, supportive community.

A simple reframe: Instead of saying “I have to,” say “I get to.”

Term 3 Highlights

Father’s Day

Father’s Day is a special time to honour and appreciate the fathers, grandfathers and father figures who play such a vital role in our lives. Their guidance, support and love shape who we are and help build a strong foundation for our futures.

In our College community, we see their impact daily, from helping with homework to cheering on the sidelines. The Junior School Father’s Day Breakfast was held today to thank them for their dedication and positive influence.

Wishing all the dads a very Happy Father’s Day! We hope you enjoy the gifts from our Father’s Day Stall, organised by our wonderful Parents & Friends Association.

Father’s Day Breakfast & Stall – Friday, 30 August

HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL

Mrs Eliza Buckoke

This term has been filled with a variety of experiences and accomplishments, both in the classroom and beyond. This week, our Home Group and Community life theme focused on forming positive habits. Good habits can significantly impact our daily lives and overall wellbeing. By striving to stay organised, exercise regularly and practice gratitude, we set ourselves up for success.

Students have been actively engaged in Mathematics, with Year 7 and select Year 9 students participating in valuable opportunities. The Year 7 “World of Maths” incursion offered hands-on, interactive activities that made learning fun, while Year 9 students explored engineering during a visit to the University of South Australia. Both events allowed students to see the real-world applications of their studies and sparked interest in future careers.

Year 9 students also attended a presentation from Encounter Youth on the risks associated with drugs, alcohol and vaping. This session provided crucial information to raise their awareness and help them make safe, informed choices in the future.

With the excitement of Book Week and the Dress-Up Parade, we also celebrated the success of our Year 8 students, who earned awards in the One+ Book Cup final. Our netball teams have demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship in the Knockout and SAPSASA carnivals. With so many sporting opportunities available, we are eagerly anticipating the Middle and Senior School Athletics Carnival on Friday, 13 September at Bridgestone Stadium.

This week, we’ve been especially excited as the culmination of weekly rehearsals and holiday sessions came together in our Junior Musical, Aladdin. This spectacular showcase of talent involving over 100 students from Years 4 to 7 is truly a highlight of the year.

As we move forward, I encourage all students to stay engaged and take advantage of the many opportunities available. By focusing on positive habits, we can make meaningful improvements in our personal lives and overall well-being.

Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to sharing more of our successes in the weeks ahead.

HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL

Mr Josh Willis

Middle and Senior School Captains recently gathered for a Leadership Team Breakfast, providing an opportunity to look back on their year of service and personal growth. The captains shared how they’ve developed in their roles, highlighting improved public speaking skills, better time management and a deeper understanding of the diverse needs within our College community. Many noted that their leadership experience has broadened their perspectives and fostered a stronger sense of responsibility. The breakfast also gave the captains a chance to offer valuable insights to benefit the new leadership team, which will be elected in the coming months. These insights will guide future leaders, ensuring a continued legacy of strong student representation at Pedare.

Middle and Senior School Student Leadership Team Breakfast – Thursday, 22 August

Leadership Announcement

We are delighted to announce our 2025 College Captains: Lanna A (Year 11) and Keziah C (Year 11). These exceptional students have consistently shown outstanding leadership qualities and a deep commitment to our College community over the years. As they step into these important roles, they carry the support and trust of the entire College, and we are confident they will lead the student body with integrity and empathy in the coming year.

FRUITFUL REFLECTION

Seeing with God’s Eyes

Book Week at Pedare was a colourful and energetic celebration, and it was wonderful to see how enthusiastically students and staff embraced the magic of our dress-up parade. The Pedare Chaplaincy team dressed as the yellow sheep from South Australian author Andrew McDonough’s story “Cecil and the Lost Sheep.” In Luke 15, Jesus shares the analogy that just as a shepherd would leave his 99 sheep to find the one that had wandered off and become lost, so too will God search for and pursue us to bring us back to Him.

Each of us is immensely important to God and uniquely created in His image. I encourage all of us to make an effort to see one another through God’s eyes. By doing this, we move beyond the labels, history and preconceptions we may subconsciously hold, allowing us to treat each person with the care, dignity and respect that all of God’s image bearers deserve.

Mrs Alaina Frost

Term Three R – 12 Casual Clothes Day

Our Term Three R – 12 Casual Clothes Day is scheduled for Friday, 6 September (Week 7). This term, students have chosen to support Backpacks for SA Kids, an organisation dedicated to providing resources that ensure the care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people during times of displacement from home and routine care.

This year, we can support Backpacks for SA Kids in two ways. One option is to donate new stationery items for the backpacks, such as pens, pencils, crayons, highlighters, erasers, markers, pencil cases, stickers, notebooks or colouring and puzzle books suitable for all ages. Please avoid donating sharp or metal objects and glue. The other option is to make a monetary donation through the Qkr App, found under College Events – Casual Clothes Day. While a $2.00 gold coin donation is customary, any contribution is appreciated to support this important cause.

LEARNING HIGHLIGHT

Book Week

19-23 August

Book Week was an amazing success!

Reception to Year 5 students kicked off the festivities by crafting Book Buddy Creatures, which quickly became their beloved reading companions. Meanwhile, Year 6 and 7 students designed personalised tote bags, engaging in the process of selecting, weeding and heat-pressing vinyl designs.

Reception and Year 1 students had a blast guessing Ms Mossel and Mrs Kretschmer’s costumes, resulting in some hilarious predictions. Lunchtimes at both Catford and Lomandra libraries were filled with activities such as bookmark and badge making, magic wand crafting, Warhammer painting and a special movie screening.

Our guest illustrator, Lauren Mullinder, spent two days with Junior School students, sharing her beautifully illustrated picture books and leading drawing workshops, inspiring creativity among the students.

The Dress-Up Parades were a highlight, with Middle and Senior School students and staff showcasing creative costumes in a parade through the Junior School. Junior School classes also participated, displaying their chosen characters. Mrs Dawes and Ms Collins added to the fun with a performance as Bear and Duck from a CBCA Shortlisted book.

Thank you to all staff, students and families for your support and participation, making this Book Week a memorable celebration of reading.

Year 10/11 Sustainable Science and Earth and Environmental Science Field Trip

On Tuesday, 20 August, Year 10 and 11 Sustainable Science and Earth and Environmental Science students went on an educational excursion to explore the fossil-rich cliffs of Willunga. Through their observations, students were able to draw conclusions about ancient marine environments that once existed in the area. The day continued with a visit to the Hallett Cove Geological Trail, where students gathered additional evidence of these ancient environments. Despite the slightly windy conditions, the coastal walk offered stunning views, making it a memorable and insightful experience for all involved.

Year 12 Essential English Hidden Treasures Excursion

The Year 12 Essential English class took a walking journey through the Adelaide CBD, following clues to uncover a series of hidden destinations. Along the way, they explored several libraries and bookstores, indulged in a visit to Haigh’s Chocolate Shop and experienced the vibrant atmosphere of the Adelaide Central Markets.

Students will soon be crafting and submitting their own unique set of instructions for a creative journey they’ve designed themselves.
